Reflection | 2013

Hope y'all had an amazing Christmas! This past year has gone by in the blink of an eye and I may say this at the end of each year, but this year it truly has.  As I sit here  reflecting about this past year, I can definitely say it was a year of change but not necessarily for the good or bad. There were some decisions that I wish I would have thought out more clearly and some moments that I wish I would have spent more time living within. 2014 will be the  the Year of Focus for me and I cannot wait to bask in the glow of all of the things that I will accomplish. Hope y'all have a great New Years...but don't get crazy.

I find myself always wishing that my boyfriend had one of these shave sets. Even if he were not to use it , I simply would want him to have it because it would look amazing sitting on the counter. I came across this phone case while I was making the polyvore board for my previous post, and I have to say that this is pretty awesome. Great for the tech enthusiast, a photographer  or anyone who just wants a really cool iPhone case.

This case has a functional shutter button, view finder and you have the option to purchase different lenses, cases and even a tripod.  Prices ranges from $28.00 - $53.00 for the iPhone 4S and 5. I am currently eyeing the radiant orchid color and may just gift it to myself this Christmas.

Pantone Color of 2014

Pantone just announced  that the Pantone Color of 2014 is Radiant Orchid.

"While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute." An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today's society."

"An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm."

Radiant Orchid's rosy undertones radiate on the skin, producing a healthy glow when worn by both men and women, A dazzling attention-getter, Radiant Orchid permeated the runways during the spring 2014 fashion shows and is already making its way onto the red carpet.

Expect to see Radiant Orchid and variations of this hue  appear in home decor, beauty looks, men's and women's clothing, and accessories throughout 2014.

Fall/Winter Must Haves

Fall/Winter must haves
 (links to items below)

Hey guys! Hope y'all had a great weekend! I apologize for my posts being so sparse, but you know... LIFE gets in the way. If you haven't noticed I like doing posts on some of my favorite items of the moment, and with this one I wanted to share my must have items for fall/winter.

Argan Oil is definitely having its moment in skincare as you will find it everywhere, even in your facial cleanser. One of my favorite oils is from the Moroccanoil line. This does wonders for your skin during the winter and the scent is simply amazing.

Sweatshirts and a Curb Link Chain had to be on my list since you know I'm a Lil Obsessed...see what I did ok. For fall everyone has their usual go to pea coat or trench so I wanted to list something that was a little different from the norm. This Cape Coat is lovely and I am definitely going to  add it to my coat collection.

Faux Fur Vest is a no brainer for fall as you can style it up or down but the Feather skirt is a great trend worth trying for the holiday season...maybe with textured tights!

The Block Heel by now is a closet staple, but this pair from Zara were just to gorgeous to not list and lastly, the Pantone color of the year is Emerald Green, so by adding this color anywhere in your fall wardrobe, whether on your nails or with a clutch, you will be good to go. I have this Zoya nail color and it goes with everything I wear and looks great with my skin tone.

Fashion Ed: Fashion Flow Theories

Today I want to discuss the theories of Fashion Flow: Downward, Horizontal, and Upward. You probably have heard these terms before but I want to go into further detail as to what they mean and the difference between them.

Downward Flow Theory ( Trickle - Down)

This theory is the most widely known and the oldest theory of fashion adoption. The basic definition in short-to be identified as a true fashion, styles must first be adopted by those at the top of the social pyramid, then the style is eventually accepted at the lower social levels. This theory assumes that there is a social hierarchy in which lower income people seek to identify with more affluent people. Because those at the top want to disassociate themselves with the lower social level, once the fashion or style has flowed to the lower social level, the upper classes will reject it and move on to the next new fashion. The phrase "that is so last season" comes to mind when I think of this theory. Again, I feel that this video clip from The Devil Wears Prada sums up this theory perfectly.

Though this theory does have validity because some fashions first appear among the social prominent,  it assumes that only the wealthy and those with position are considered fashionable and that those with lower income only accept the fashions passed down from them. With our society as it is today there are many social groups and many directions in which fashion can and does travel, so this theory does not stand as strong as it did in the past.

Horizontal Flow Theory (Trickle - Across)

This theory claims that fashions move horizontally among social groups on similar levels than vertically from one level to another. It cuts out the assumption that there is a single, homogenous fashion public in this country when in reality there are a number of distinctly different groups that make up the fashion public. Each group have their own characteristics and ideas as to what fashion means. Examples would be: celebrities, socialites, musicians just to name a few.

All social groups know of fashion innovation at the same time and fashion is accepted at a faster rate. As soon as signs of an interesting new style appear, manufacturers mass-produce lower priced adaptations or copies that many consumers can afford. The mass market does not await the approval of the "class" market before it adopts a fashion.

The horizontal flow theory recognizes that what wealthy society people are wearing today is not necessarily what middle-class suburbanites, college students, or office workers will either wear tomorrow or wait until tomorrow to accept. It can be looked at regionally as well. What New Yorker's wear and find fashionable will differ greatly from those who live in Miami or the west coast. This theory acknowledges that there are separate markets in fashion goods as in any other type of merchandise.

Upward Flow Theory (Trickle - up)

This is the newest of the fashion adoption theories and reflects social changes that have occurred over the past five decades. It holds that the young of low income families and those in higher income groups who adopt lower income lifestyles are quicker than any social group to adopt new and different fashions. Fashion adoption begins with the young of lower income groups then moves upward to higher income groups.

Dior T-shirt

A great example of the upward flow theory this has been the T-shirt. In its short- sleeved version, it has long been worn by truckers, laborers, and farm workers. In its long-sleeved version, it was the uniform of local bowling and softball teams. In the 1970s, the T-shirt became a message board and sprouted a brand new fashion cottage industry. Since then the t-shirt, once a fashion for the streets has transitioned to couture.

Another illustration of upward flow fashion that is making a comeback in 2013: the grunge look. Following the fashion statements of the grunge rockers of the early 90s, youth were dressed in ripped worn-out denim and plaid flannel shirts to imitate fashions from bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and because fashion is cyclical, we see that this 90s look is once again back in style.

90s Grunge Look

Fashion will never flow in only one direction. Of course, customers will always exist for high fashion and for conservative fashion. But producers and retailers must now accept that they will be doing a considerable proportion of their business in fashions created or adopted first by the lower  income young and by those who choose to be allied with them.

Fashion Profile | Gwen Stefani

I wanted to start my fashion profile posts with one of my favorite musician/designers: Gwen Stefani. Ever since her debut with No Doubt, Gwen Stefani  has become to be known around the world for her eclectic, unique and original personal style. She is recognized by fashion trend-setters by constantly changing her image and tirelessly searching out new and interesting style influences, which has resulted over time in a dramatic evolution from SoCal rocker girl to cover-girl sexpot, avant-garde experimentalist to established fashion icon.

I remember first being influenced by her style back when she used to wear a bindi on her forehead which  you can see in the "Just a girl" video. I thought she looked so cool that I went and got these gem stickers and started wearing them at school.

Her most fashionable videos (In my opinion) are "What you waiting for" and "Cool"

"What You Waiting For" was inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and she appears as several characters dressed in fashions by fashion designer John Galliano. You can also see the Harajuku influence throughout this video which is a mix of gothic lolita and cyber punk fashions.

"Cool" is my absolute favorite video from her. It was beautifully shot and the song is great, but the fashion is to die for. I want to have an entire wardrobe mimicked after the outfits in this video, every single piece. The video has a 1950s modern-vintage vibe from the pinup one-piece, gingham halter and belted dresses to the pompadour hair styles. Gwen, with her platinum blond hair and bold red lips, wears this particular style beautifully.

Fall 2013 RTW-
Her L.A.M.B. fashion line encompasses apparel, accessories and fragrance. Launched in 2004, her sporty street chic label is influenced by a variety of cultures such as Asian, South American, Guatemalan and Jamaican. Stefani has admitted that L.A.M.B. is a direct reflection of her personal taste--her "dream closet". I look forward to her next runway show and can't wait to see how she reinvents her image next.

A lil obsessed | Fashion Sweatshirts

Sweatshirts = Fashionable!?! Sign me up! Being that I'm sort of fresh out of university, this is a trend that I can definitely work into my wardrobe. Instead of pairing these with some busted jeans, I would pair these with a leather mini or pencil skirt to make it chic. They were all over the runways and I've seen some outfits from Wendy's Lookbook (she's amazing) and she pulls together the fashion sweatshirt look flawlessly, see here and here. Now to decide which one of these to purchase. Hmmm…

Fashion Ed: Fashion Adoption Theory (The Devil Wears Prada scene)

This was by far one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Even though she is tearing Andy a new one, I completely understood everything Miranda was saying. I feel that she describes the fashion adoption  theory and a little bit of the trickle down theory perfectly.

From Miranda describing the color cerulean and  how it was presented in a collection of Oscar De La Renta's gowns to her stating that Andy fished her sweater out of a clearance bin, she nails it. I love this movie!

Fashion Ed: Fashion Adoption Theory

When a style or trend debuts, whether it's trying out a new BB cream or obtaining a pair of trendy cut out boots, when would you say it is that you catch on or adapt to a trend? The fashion adoption theory was one of my favorite theories to learn, as it tells you how a style or trend starts and ends.

Fashion Adoption: A process on how and individual accepts and purchases a new fashion or a style. This innovation adaption curve plots out the five categories and basically shows that with time, any new style or trends popularity rises and eventually fades.

Innovation Adaption Curve

There are five categories that describe how early a consumer adopts a new fashion compared with others: Fashion Innovators, Fashion Opinion Leaders, Mass Market Consumers, Late Fashion Followers, and Fashion Isolates and Laggards.

Tartan is trending right now, so I feel that it would be a great example to follow.

Fashion Innovators
Yves Saint Laurent-Metro.US

Consumers who adopt a new fashion soon after it appears on the market relatively earlier than most other consumers. This category usually consists of socialites, models and actresses who shop and can afford to purchase the latest styles when they are first offered or shown on the runway.

Fashion Opinion leaders
Hello Magazine

Those who have a genuine interest and love for fashion that they adopt the style and contribute to its rise in popularity. They communicate information about new fashion to where  other people are influenced by them to accept or reject it. Fashion magazines, popular fashion bloggers along with fashion innovators would be in this category. Retail buyers pay very close attention to fashion opinion leaders  for they can spark or end a trend.

Mass Market Consumers
Neiman Marcus
This would be the category I would  say that most people fall into. Once a style/trend is well accepted, it will become widely available in retail stores which leads mass market consumers to adopt it.

Late Fashion Followers

The trend will eventually start waning down and the adoption levels start to drop off. At this point the late fashion followers will adopt the trend.

Fashion Isolates and Laggards

Consumers who adopt the style because of social acceptance or of its availability at low and discounted prices. At this point you will start to see the style/trend available at off-price and discount stores.

Well there you have it. This of course is just my explanation of the fashion adoption theory and hopefully you were able to follow along and learn something new. Which category would you say you fall into?

Thanks for reading!

A lil obsessed: Tory Burch Charlie Box Chain Necklace

I am not that much of a jewelry person, I'm a studs and one ring kind of girl, but I am hyperventilating over this beautiful necklace. Box or curb chain necklaces are a classic staple that every girl should have in their jewelry box and I am currently devoid of one. I was recently browsing through Wendy's Lookbook (I absolutely love her) and one of my favorite looks from her is here. I love the look but my eyes went straight to the necklace and now it is all I can think about. It is sold out and I cannot seem to find it anywhere but I will find this necklace if it is the last thing I do!

Fashion Ed: What is Fashion/Style?

When I hear the word fashion I immediately conjure up images from the pages of fashion magazines (duh) and replay scenes from The Devil Wears Prada and Clueless ( don’t judge me) in my head. From there I start thinking about the clothes I wear and wonder if it would be considered “fashionable” and start questioning my sense of style and on and on. After all of that pondering, i am left asking myself: what is fashion/style really? Well ,here is what I got.

The term Fashion by definition is: A popular style or practice that is accepted by a majority of a group. So right now I can say that the Peplum, is in fashion(believe me you’ve seen it everywhere) because it is popular right now and widely accepted, but fashion is not just for the apparel industry alone.
ASOS Dress

Automobiles and appliances are also fashion items( e.g., blenders that come in a multitude of colors). Almost every product sold is influenced by fashion and it is the customer who determines the fashion. How is that you say? Well to put it simply, it is a way for the consumer to be unique and different. It is a form of expression. I can not stand out from crowd if I'm rocking the same (insert here) that everyone else is. If company A is only selling one color of a blender but company B has more than 10 color options available, you bet my money is going to company B because I have the option to choose what I want can be little different. Company A will eventually fail if they don't appeal to consumer tastes and offer more color options.
Company A
Company B

It is easy to confuse the words style and fashion and believe that they are synonymous they aren't. Style is the characteristic “appearance “ of a product. The distinctive way a product looks and the combination of features that make that item different from others.By saying Grace Kelly had a great sense of style, I am basically stating that I liked the unique look and combination of the clothing/accessories that she wore. Her style is as influential today as it was back then.

Those are the text-book definitions for style and fashion but the meaning for the words can vary from person to person. What is considered fashionable to me , you may think is out dated or the type of style you like, I may think is lacking taste. In fashion terms, Taste defines a personal feeling toward a particular style. When people speak of good taste they are referring to the appropriateness of a style for a particular occasion, so taste is the opinion of some but not adhered to everyone.

A lil obsessed: Lug sole shoes

ASOS Strider heeled loafers /Pour La Victoire Kerr/ ASOS Planet shoes/Sergio Rossi Freedom wedge
(shoe photos from their respective sites)

I can't seem to get these shoes out of my mind at the moment. If your not sure what a lug sole is, it is the thick rubber sole with deep indentations usually found on work or hiking boots and is used to improve traction and stability. Some genius decided to combine the ruggedness of this sole with booties and high heeled pumps and voilà...lug soles are in fashion. They were all over the fall runways and now I just need to get my hands on a pair....that's preferably on sale.

Fall Beauty Trend: Matte Nails

Matte Nails

Another fall beauty trend I cant wait to try, Matte Nails. I think I'm going to try it with an unexpected color like a neon pink or teal instead of a black, oxblood or any other typical fall color. Now I just need to decide which topcoat I should use....

Here is another outfit inspired by Clueless. This outfit is worn in the scene where Cher and Tai make up while watching Travis skate. One of my favorites :)

H&M Online!!

OMG!! ok woooooosawwww... I just found out that after many delays, H&M has finally launched their online store for the US and I am hyperventilating. Alright maybe I'm not freaking out that bad but I have waited very very long time for this day.The closest H&M store for me is an hour and a half drive away! Of course I would make the drive but it was very seldom that I did. Along with every item that is sold in the brick and mortar locations being available online, they have also launched their H&M Home collection, and you can pre-order collections before they are launched. Not that I need even more of a reason to shop there. So now I am perusing the site and I just do not know how to deal right now. Hopefully I don't go all Confessions of a Shopaholic cray and max out my credit card(s)....we will closet needs some serious updating anyway. Maybe a future post will be about my (massive) haul!

Saturday, August 3, 2013

So I recently watched Clueless and was reminded of why I seem to watch it over and over again and it never gets old. I love the outfits in the film and have always wanted to emulate them in real life so i would say that this is my attempt. I'm going to post some boards (I'm currently obsessed with polyvore) featuring modern versions of the iconic costumes. Hope you like them!
